MUFG has been ranked 75th in the Social Mobility Employer Index 2020, the leading authority on employer best practice in the field of social mobility. The Index was created by the Social Mobility Foundation in 2017 and ranks UK employers on the actions they take to ensure they are open to and progressing talent from all backgrounds.

At MUFG, Inclusion and Diversity is pivotal and social mobility is an important aspect of that. We are committed to creating a culture where all our employees feel they belong and are supported regardless of their socio-economic background, and have taken large steps in the past year toward realising this goal. Participating in and being recognised within the Social Mobility Employer Index 2020 is an important milestone; it recognises how far we have come on our social mobility journey and is also a benchmark for the work still to be done.

Social mobility is the movement of individuals or families within or between social strata of a society. In the UK, research shows* that people from disadvantaged backgrounds do not have the same access to opportunities; this is now going to be further impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This index highlights the employers who are doing the most to change how they recruit, and develop talented employees from different social class backgrounds. Now in its fourth year, the Index is the definitive benchmark of organisations committed to improving social mobility in the workplace.

This year 119 employers from 17 sectors, who collectively employ almost one million people in the UK, participated in the survey each answering around 100 questions.

Atif Hayat, Social Mobility Network co-sponsor and Deputy Global Head of Sales and Trading, commented on the recognition:

"At MUFG, we are delighted with the progress that we have achieved over the past year. The establishment of a Social Mobility Network alongside the increasing diversity in our early careers population and the focus of our CSR programme in supporting disadvantaged young people are all factors that contributed to this achievement.

"We are very excited to continue building on these activities, to enable MUFG to have a workforce that reflects the society we operate in and exceed the expectations of our clients and regulators."

With a number of actions and initiatives in the pipeline, we have ambition to improve our ranking even further in 2021.
