    In the early 1960s the bank foresaw a strong Dutch-Japanese trade expansion and set up a representative office in Amsterdam as an investment location for Japanese financial institutions and companies. In May 2016, the branch was renamed to MUFG Bank (Europe), incorporating MUFG bank's Brussels branch into the network.

    MUFG opened its Doha Office on March 30, 2009, having acquired authorisation from Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority and a licence from Qatar Financial Centre Authority as a PIIB Category 4 firm on January 15, 2009.

    Supported by substantial energy resources, particularly that of natural gas, the State of Qatar is one of fastest-growing countries in the Middle East. Qatar is currently the largest liquefied natural gas producer in the world, with a production capacity of 77 MTPA. It is also the host country for the FIFA World Cup in 2022.     MUFG's predecessor company the Bank of Tokyo opened a representative office in Johannesburg in 1961, but due to international economic sanctions against apartheid, the office closed in 1986. The Johannesburg Representative Office was reopened in 1991 after the abolition of apartheid, incorporating the territory of the former Nairobi Representative office. The Johannesburg office manages our business in 47 out of Africa's 55 countries.

    South Africa's economy is achieving strong growth through exports of primary products such as gold, iron ore and diamonds.
