MUFG's predecessor company the Bank of Tokyo opened a representative office in Johannesburg in 1961, but due to international economic sanctions against apartheid, the office closed in 1986. The Johannesburg Representative Office was reopened in 1991 after the abolition of apartheid, incorporating the territory of the former Nairobi Representative office. The Johannesburg office manages our business in 47 out of Africa's 55 countries.
